AI Search Share of Voice: Formulas, Examples, and Limitations
Calculate AI share of voice with explicit counting rules, worked examples, and separate definitions for brand mentions and source citations.
The short answer
AI share of voice needs an explicit unit and denominator. One useful panel metric is a brand's counted appearances divided by appearances of all tracked brands, with each brand counted at most once per valid answer. This differs from mention rate, which divides brand-bearing answers by valid answers. Citation share is another metric with a source-link denominator. Define the method before comparing percentages.
Choose the counting unit
Decide whether you want to measure brand presence, recommendations, or cited-source links. For a mention-based panel, count each tracked brand once per valid answer even if the answer repeats the name. Keep the competitor roster, prompt cohort, provider, locale, and time window fixed. This creates an interpretable operational metric, although it remains a sample of selected questions.
If your team cares about recommendations rather than any mention, document the classification rule and review ambiguous cases. An answer can name a company to explain why it is unsuitable. Counting that as a recommendation would overstate its presence in the buying decision. Preserve the answer text so another analyst can validate the classification.
Calculate mention share and mention rate separately
In a hypothetical set of 10 valid answers, Brand A appears in 6 answers, Brand B in 4, and Brand C in 2. The brands can appear together, so the total is 12 counted brand appearances. Brand A's mention share is 6 divided by 12, or 50%. Its mention rate is 6 divided by 10, or 60%. Both calculations are correct but answer different questions.
An answer containing none of the tracked brands contributes to the valid-answer denominator for mention rate but not to the tracked-brand appearance denominator for mention share. Failed requests contribute to neither. If no tracked brand appears at all, share of voice is undefined for that sample; report insufficient observed appearances rather than inventing a percentage.
Mention share = brand appearances / all tracked-brand appearances × 100
Mention rate = answers containing the brand / valid answers × 100Keep citation share in its own metric family
For a source-link panel, decide whether links are counted once per source URL, once per domain per answer, or in another clearly documented unit. Then calculate your site's counted citations divided by all eligible counted citations. This denominator can include publishers and communities rather than only competing software brands.
Bing defines Citation Share within its own first-party report using citations for a grounding query. That reporting method and coverage should not be assumed identical to your custom prompt panel. Label the report source and definition beside the percentage. A panel mention share, an owned-domain citation rate, and Bing Citation Share should not occupy one unlabeled trend line.
Explain how roster and prompt changes affect the result
If a new competitor is added to the previous example and appears four times, Brand A's mention share falls from 50% to 37.5% even though it still appears six times. That is a roster effect. Similarly, adding questions on which your company already performs well can improve the average without improving any existing answer.
Publish share of voice on a stable roster and core cohort, then show expansion cohorts separately. Break results down by provider and buying intent before interpreting a total. If weighting prompts by business importance, preserve the weights and justify them; those weights express your team's priorities rather than measured market demand. Use the metric to prioritize investigation, not to claim overall market share.
| Metric | Numerator | Denominator |
|---|---|---|
| Mention share | Brand appearances | Appearances of all tracked brands |
| Mention rate | Answers containing the brand | All valid answers |
| Citation share | Eligible citations to your site | All eligible counted citations |
Your next steps
- Name the unit: mention, recommendation, cited answer, or source link.
- Publish the formula, roster, cohort, provider, and reporting window.
- Exclude failed measurements and retain valid answers with no brand mention.
- Version changes to prompts, competitors, classification, and weights.
- Pair share of voice with the underlying counts and intent breakdown.
Common questions
Why can mention rates add up to more than 100%?
Several brands can appear in the same answer, so each has its own answer-level rate. Mention share instead divides by total counted brand appearances and sums to 100% across the included roster when appearances exist.
Is AI share of voice market share?
No. It describes the selected panel and counting method. Market share concerns a separately defined market, such as revenue or customers. Do not infer those outcomes from appearances in a controlled set of prompts.
